Ophthalmology and Orthoptics

The Shropshire ophthalmology department works across the county, with outpatient departments in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. Paediatric Orthoptic clinics are also running at some community sites. Patients are usually referred to us via the GP, Opticians, Health Visitors or Paediatricians.

The Orthoptic Department specialises in seeing patients with a variety of eye problems including strabismus (squint), amblyopia (lazy eye), double vision and eye movement problems. We are specialists in assessing vision, how the eyes work together and ocular motility in patients of all ages. We work closely in clinics with the Paediatric Ophthalmologists to assess children with all types of eye conditions.

The service covers children and young people 0-17 years. Orthoptic clinics for both children and adults take place in the same department, so patients have the same assessments with the same team members. Where possible, the team look at supporting discharge from the hospital eye service to community opticians for long term eyecare follow up.

The service can be contacted on 01743 261000 ext 3324 – we can’t always answer the phone but you can leave a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Our RNIB Eye Care Liaison Officer can offer practical and emotional support to people living with sight loss and their families & carers. We also work closely with the Sensory Inclusion Service, who support children with visual impairment in school and at home.

RNIB Eye Care Liaison Officer, Emma Chaplin may be contacted either by email at e.chaplin2@nhs.net or by phone on 07808 736449
